“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.” – James 1:5–6 (ESV)
I once went deep sea fishing just a few days after a big storm. The waves were huge—our boat rocked from side to side and bounced up and down with every swell. It was hard to stay steady on my feet, and honestly, I didn’t like that feeling one bit. Without the motor, we would’ve been at the mercy of the wind, drifting wherever it took us.
But we did have a motor—and a captain. And I trusted them to get us where we needed to go. If I hadn’t believed they could, I never would’ve stepped on that boat.
That experience reminds me a lot of what it means to pray with faith. I say I believe that God hears and answers my prayers—but if I don’t truly believe that, why would I even bother praying? Trusting God can be hard sometimes, especially when He sees the whole picture and we’re holding just one small piece. His timeline often doesn’t look anything like ours—but He’s still faithful.
And just like that boat had a captain who knew how to navigate the storm, I can trust that God is guiding me, even when everything around me feels shaky.
So, let’s talk about prayer—not just saying the words, but how we say them and what we believe while we’re praying. If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably prayed at times because you knew it was the right thing to do—but if you’re honest, you didn’t really expect much to happen. You were hoping, maybe, but not truly expecting. James 1:5–6 gently but firmly calls us higher. It reminds us that when we’re lacking wisdom—and let’s be real, who isn’t—we can ask God for it. And here’s the best part: He gives generously to all without reproach. That means God doesn’t shame us for asking. He’s not annoyed, tired of our questions, or holding back. He wants to help. But there’s one key ingredient: faith.
James tells us to ask in faith, with no doubting. That doesn’t mean we’re never unsure or that we have to be super-spiritual and confident 24/7. It means we come to God with expectation—believing He’s good, He hears us, and He’s already at work.
Praying with expectation looks like:
Trusting that God is who He says He is.
Believing He is listening, even when the answers feel slow.
Holding on to the promise that if we ask, He knows and will give us exactly what we need (remember He sees the whole picture).
Think of it like planting a seed. You don’t plant and walk away assuming nothing will happen—you water it, watch it, and prepare for growth. Even before you see anything sprout, you believe it’s working.
So if you’re feeling confused, stuck, or unsure of what to do next—pray. But don’t just toss up a “maybe this’ll work” kind of prayer. Ask with faith. Ask with confidence. And then wait with expectation, knowing your Father is generous and kind.
Because God isn’t just able to answer—He’s willing.
Reflection Questions:
What have you been praying about lately?
Are you praying with faith or just hoping things work out?
What would it look like to wait with expectation this week?
Take Action:
Write out a specific prayer, then journal what you're expecting God to do—not because He has to, but because He loves to respond to faith-filled hearts.
You’re not praying into the air. You’re praying to a Father who gives generously. Let that shape your prayers today.
Prayer:
A Prayer for Expectant Faith
Father God,
Thank You that You are a generous and loving Father who gives without hesitation and without reproach. You never grow tired of hearing my prayers, and You never shame me for asking. What a gift it is to be able to come to You freely and fully, knowing You welcome me every time.
Lord, I admit that sometimes I pray without really expecting an answer. I let doubt creep in, and I hold back from fully trusting You. But today, I want to shift that. I want to pray with faith—faith that believes You are listening, that You care, and that You will respond in Your perfect wisdom and timing.
Right now, I’m asking for wisdom in the areas where I feel lost, unsure, or overwhelmed, would You guide me? Would You make the next steps clear and calm the noise in my mind?Help me recognize Your voice above all the others.
Grow my faith, Lord. Teach me to wait with expectation, to hope with confidence, and to trust without wavering. I choose to believe that You are working behind the scenes, even when I can’t see it yet.
Thank You for being a God who gives.
Thank You for being a God who sees me.
I’m watching, I’m waiting—and I’m believing.
In Jesus’ name,Amen.
